2007-11-26 14:19:33 yeah, I did a wee bit of Highland Lakes and there was a good amount of thin crusty snow making the path hidden and easy to slip on with my running shoes. —TonyZuccarino
2007-11-30 19:07:31 I got a wee bit of Dardanelles Cone—not the summit, unfortunately. 17 miles of hiking (some trail, some class 4 slabs); 8 in the kayak. Tony? Bob? Susi?! —DanAhlborn
2007-11-30 19:13:05 Do you come back with any furs Mr. Wolfe? —BobRynd
2007-11-30 20:07:23 Walked through a veritable killing fields of bleached and well-munched bones... got enough deer and coyote skulls, thanks. Will post some new pictures in Eye Candy (under Pics) soon. Begged off the nasty 1000 ft. chute to summit the Cone cuz I knew the top would be a sheet of ice. As you already found out, a little snow goes a long way. FYI: The only furry thing I found was an owl turd. —DanAhlborn
2007-11-30 22:08:27 I noticed you don't include Bull Run Lk or Heiser Lk. or Bull Lk or Kinney lakes (upper).............why? Oh.....maybe trying to divert the usual ways then. Thank you. —SusiLewis
2008-05-27 05:45:23 Went hiking to Duck Lake this Memorial weekend. New snow covered everything with a soft white blanket. It was really quite beautiful. While stopped to take a photo, I heard something behind me and a bear comes stumbling out of the woods and on to the trail. Fifty feet away, we traded glances, I yelled, and the bear took off in the other direction. Quite a surprise! —BobRynd
2008-05-27 07:57:35 Nice picture Bob... you must have maintained your composure well to take that pic! —TonyZuccarino
2008-05-27 08:33:31 Imagine the quiteness of the woods, then have this big guy stubble out of woods. Then, down by Duck Lake itself, I heard a couple of coyote howls maybe 100 yards in the woods. In between the cabins @ Duck Lake I see this a half eaten baby deer carcuss. I interupted someones dinner! I have pics. —BobRynd
2008-05-27 09:15:00 what do you think got to the baby deer? the coyotes or? —TonyZuccarino
2008-05-27 09:50:48 Definitely the coyotes. Hiking down to the lake I'd seen 1 set of deer tracks followed by two sets of coyote tracks. —BobRynd
2008-05-27 10:11:41 huh.. didn't know coyotes were that effective in two's.... —TonyZuccarino
2008-05-27 12:01:51 I'm not sure if there was more than one, but the barking, yelping and howling sounded like at least a couple of animals. It was a bit unnerving to think that there were eyes looking out of the woods(glad it wasn't nightime) at me as I strolled around Duck Lake. —BobRynd
2008-05-27 12:11:41 'unnerving' ??? to say the least! I suspect I would have been more than unnerved between the coyotes and the bear, lol. —TonyZuccarino
2008-05-27 13:07:45 Bears and Coyotes are scavengers and they're not going to eat me - they run. A mountain lion, on the otherhand, would be scary - silent, stealthy and hungery, stalking prey. —BobRynd
2008-05-27 18:35:51 tell that to the guy up in Alaska who became bear munchies along with his girlfriend, and even if our non grizzly variety are acting as scavengers they might still take a big ole swipe at me with those claws. I agree on the mountain lion though... anyone ever seen one in these parts? are they known to inhabit our area. —TonyZuccarino
2008-06-16 10:49:01 So, I went for a nice hike this past weekend to Bull Run Peak. Parked at the end of Pacific Valley Rd. + addition 3/4 mile up the jeep road. Beautiful hike up, then skied down the north face of Bull Run Peak. Upon returning to my Jeep, we round the bend, looking forward to a cold beer at the car, and we see a big tree fallen across the jeep road. No, wait minute, it's not only across the road, IT FELL ON MY CAR! Crushed the front end! —BobRynd
2008-06-16 10:56:39 Absolutely incredible! 16-18 inch diameter tree, could have fallen anywhere in the forest, but at that time and moment, fell on my car! I've got pictures. Tremendous thanks to Firefighter "Haines" from Woodford/Markleeville for having a radio and calling it in to the Alpine Sheriff, and Woodfords Towing. His communication saved hours & hours of time, and Alpine Sheriff, "Rick" (I think was his name), on the spot with a chainsaw and made quick work of that tree. —BobRynd
2008-06-17 06:32:37 Aw man! So sorry about your car. What a freak occurence is right. I would like to know the frequency tower that the Firemen used... I cannot usually get any reception out of PV or elsewhere once leave Mosquito Lk area. Our Sheriff team is very versatile and available. SOOOO Nice to know. Hope your insurance comes through decently! —SusiLewis
2008-06-17 07:21:19 Susi, click on my profile for a couple of pictures, please share with Susan. Susi, I don't remember the gentleman firefighter's first name, but "Haines" called his dispatch, I believe down in Markleeville, so maybe he had "line-of-sight" from PV to make radio contact. From there they contacted Alpine County Sheriff. —BobRynd
2008-06-17 16:39:11 So Bob, important question. Was the beer damaged too, or still available to you to console you as you assessed the damage to your jeep and waited for a tow? —DianeLundquist
2008-06-18 09:11:50 Yes Diane, The beer was cold and refreshing. We were fortunate that the tree didn't squash the body of the car and jam the doors closed. Wouldn't that have been a tragedy to get to the car, see the ice chest, but not be able to access it! —BobRynd
2008-06-21 13:15:22 Bob, amazing coincidence. It could have been alot worse as you noted. —TonyZuccarino
