Resources - Bear Valley Wiki

One of the primary motivations for this wiki is to help new residents or visitors find out how to get stuff done.
There are alot of good answers to most questions, but now we have a place to centralize the information. Please contribute your own favourite person or resource.

Bear Valley Real Estate Company (BVRE) is my 1st goto source for all information. Joel Barnett and Tammie Hayward (sold us our house) are awesome resources... if they don't have the answer, they sure as heck know who to ask and get back to you. They can be reached at 209-753-2334. I also email them at joel@bearvalleyrealestate.com and tammie@bearvalleyrealestate.com. Tammie now works for their office down in Arnold (25 miles down the hill to the west), but she is quite up to speed on all things between Arnold and Bear Valley. Eric Jung, a broker at the BVRE office, is the unofficial town historian as well as owner/publisher/editor of the Cub Reporter, a superb source of relevant news and resources. Eric has even written a book about the area's history, called Bulls, Bears, & Highway Fares, Bear Valley History. This book is a most entertaining and complete read on the BV story ... absolutely required reading for BV citizenry.

Groceries/Supplies

The General Store. That's it folks. This is still a one pony town, and you have to love that. Dave is the friendly owner who stocks up this store with all pretty much what you need in a pinch. They have some other misc stuff besides food/liqour/wine/groceries, come down to take a look. Also have a deli which I have not tried myself. Residents get a 10% discount.

House Maintenance:

Tree Removal

Sean's Tree Service. Sean comes up from out of town and can do any size job. Nice guy, did alot of work for friends of ours in town. He can be reached at 209-588-9350.

Painting - yeah, you need to keep wood exterior stain fresh, otherwise between the snow banks in the winter and sun in the summer, you're going to have a bleached look real fast.

Chris Bowen. Chris did our house for a very reasonable price and did great work. He is in town and can be reached at 209-753-6293.
Alex ... don't know how to reach him, but he's the husband of the lady who owns the art gallery in town. He's got a great reputation for quality work.
Tony Dominguez. I didn't end up using Tony D for my job, but he does HIGH quality work. He brushes on all stain multiple times using actual skilled painters. I thought it was overkill, but if you want the utmost job and are ready to pay for it, give him a call at 209 770 2287.

Pest Control. Yeah, have you seen the size of the ants up here?! Mice and other critters like to try and get in for the winter.

Mountain Pest Control (Josh West). Neighbor uses him, so we signed up as well. He's pretty reasonable compared to the brand name pest control guys. He can be reached at 209-984-3977/209-768-5022. Josh told me he took rattlesnakes off his list of stuff he'll guarantee. Apparently a rattler took up position between Josh and the crawlspace exit... he made it out ok, but doesn't want to deal with these critters anymore. I talked to a lady down in Big Meadows campground who killed a nest of timber rattlers near her camper home. But nobody has seen a rattler up here at 7000+ feet.

Construction

Gene Carr built the house we live in. He's one of the nicest people I've met in town, and does alot of the work himself. I can vouch for his work quality as I personally bought one of his homes. This number should work: 209 728 2578.

Utilities

Propane Gas, call Ebbett Pass Gas (no kidding) Service at 209 795 1391.
Cable TV, forget about it. Cable is a joke in Bear Valley. Get DirecTV or Netflix or rent movies at the pizza place.
Phone, call SBC. You can get great DSL here... I get close to the advertised 512kbps uplink ... Skype works fine. No need for big long distance plans.
