You practically don't need to bring a thing with you to enjoy any Bear Valley activity, whatever the season.
Here's where to get outfitted:
-
Bear Valley Sport Shop - you can get downhill/XC skis, snowshoes, ski boots, poles. Buy or Rent. You can get winter and summer clothing, hiking gear/shoes/boots. I think he has some climbing gear. You can usually find Lance, the owner in the store. Super accommodating, nice guy, and very knowledgeable about the products and the area in general. Lance can rent you a ski kit for the whole season, a good solution for kids... why buy a new set every year. Wait till they're grown, and rent till then. Among other good things, one thing you can count on here is a good ski boot fit. The store can be reached at 209-753-2844.
-
Bear Valley Cross Country and Adventure Company - also the towns official gas station, make sure to fill your tank before continuing up Hwy 4, the next nearest gas is about 34 miles east in Markleeville (Ebbetts Pass is open Memorial Day Weekend through mid-November only). Located as soon as you turn into Bear Valley from Hwy 4. Besides reg and prem grades gas, the store also has:
- A complete selection of winter clothing, accessories and gear. They carry Patogonia, Columbia, Sporthill, Swix, Solomon, Rossignol, Fischer, Karhu, Garmont, Yakima and other top brands. They also rent and sell Snowshoes, XC, Tele and Alpine Touring gear. SnoPark passes too.
- Kayaks and mountain bikes for rent and sale. If you live in the area, note that every Labor Day, Bear Valley Adventure Company has a big sale on used kayaks at the end of the summer. I got mine at discount this way. Why pay retail?
- Fishing supplies, fishing licenses, and good local guidebooks (good book on local mountain biking opptys)
- Clothing (they sell nice wide brim hats cheap, very necessary in the summer sun ... we get strong UV up here)
- Cold drinks (also necessary in summer!)
- The proprietors, Paul and Dianne Petersen have an extensive knowledge of both the village and the surrounding forest and it's recreational activities. They can be reached at least 9-5 daily (really - 365 days a year) at 209 753-2834.
- General Store, (209)753-2842, located in Village Center. There are two businesses you can count on being open year around. Bear Valley XC and Adventure (above), and the General Store. Not only all manner of fresh meat, vegetables, fruit, food staples, beverages, wine, liqour, but camping supplies, tools, well all kinds of odds and ends a remote general store would have to serve it's remote populace. Bear Valley residents get a 10% discount. You can pick up a copy of the Cub Reporter here. Don't forget there is a decent deli here. Come here and pack a picnic basket or fill your backup up before heading off for the woods. One dinner solution if all the restaurants are closed is Dave's freezer: Hungry Man Deluxe dinner! Dave is the owner and one of the nicest people you'll ever meet.
