New (Apr 05) part-time resident to Bear Valley area, we live on Quaking Aspen Rd.

Started this wiki, with the help of code and much assistance from the [WWW]DavisWiki founders.

I will be posting pics and data about various things to do, hiking, fishing, four wheel driving, snowmobiling, of which I've done some and plan to do alot more.

One project I am working on is attaching a GPS unit to my 525 KTM dirt bike and exploring as many trails as possible. OK, I've got the GPS attached, but winter 05/06 has arrived. I will try to move the setup to my snowmobile and publish some snowmobile tracks...

With the GPS tracks I collect, I plan to publish an extensive record of the off-road and hiking opptys around Bear Valley.

Can you make a tar.gz file of your 'data' directory (dwiki/data) and put it someplace for me to download? I want to make sure my conversion script works right.PhilipNeustrom

Is their a possible way to add a random page feature like on normal wiki's? I love that feature.CoreyFarwell

Corey, yes you can add any page you like. The typical way in wiki's (and this is not very intuitive) is to Search for the page name you'd like to create. A list of pages will be returned 'like' the one you want to create. From there, you are given a choice to add to an existing page, or create your new one.
Thanks for all your work on this site...! —TonyZuccarino

Yes I understand how to add a page, but if you go to wikipedia, they have a navigation bar on the left, and in it is a thing for "random article." is this feature available here? —CoreyFarwell

I didn't read your comment carefully, sorry. Yes, this wiki has the random article feature. I took it off early on since I had so few articles. If you'd like, you can research how to add it back... check out daviswiki.org (my sw platform) and see their Random article facility. Feel free to try it here. —TonyZuccarino

Hey, there. I applaud the slow but sure growth of this nifty website. I sure hope people appreciate your effort and time.

How do you create a page that redirects? I've tried redirecting just for kicks arts/crafts to arts and crafts and it doesn't work. —CoreyFarwell

Corey, simply add the text #redirect arts and crafts to the page. That is omit the brackets. —MatthiasSpiller

This is Far from [RocWiki.org]. Could you possibly e-mail me the 'visitor' and the 'weather update' code you have? Those are awsome features, I'd like to roll them into RocWiki as well. -FarMcKon.

Hi FarMcKon, I'll have to look into how to pull that code out, but I'd be happy to provide it. The weather code assumes you have an XML file uploaded by WeatherDisplay software, which itself is pulling weather data from an attached weather station. The weather ticker is therefore data coming from my own weather station. The visitor page assumes that you have a subscription to a service (I can find out which) that does IP to city lookups. Costs $20 for like 50,000 accesses, but it's far more accurate than the free services.

"I just checked Google Maps, and it looks like they actually have a decent resolution of Bear Valley and all of California now. It's only available on Google Maps and Google Earth. Heres the link to [WWW]Bear Valley. I was thinking we could integrate Google Maps API into OurBV...kind of like what the Davis Wiki has done. —CoreyFarwell

Corey, excellent update. I had given up on Google Maps... the old sat snaps were from the 80's or something. This new res is great! Integration of a high res sat map is definitely on my list of things to do. Be nice to overlay gps track files onto the google map... yeah. Well I am very busy with 2 startups as it is... this probably won't get done right away. Do you know how to code Python???

"I know basic Python....not much though. I'm trying to find tutorials and examples everywhere. This would be a nice start if you want me to give it a look/try. If not, I understand. Curious, wby?" —CoreyFarwell

Hey Tony. Good news. We finally launched the new software and the Wikispot project. In any case, we from the development team, would like to formally invite you and the community to take a look. BrentLaabs and myself have spent quite a few hours moving the data over to the new software by hand, and it has honestly been pretty fun to see the glimpse into your community. In any case, take a look, the bugs are gone, the features that were to be implemented are implemented with many more. The search is improved, and the files are stored in a faster database, most everything about the new system has improved. There are no requirements, please contact me by e-mail for further information.

Adding a forum to this wiki in my opinion sound like a good idea :-) —CoreyFarwell

Corey, yes, it is pretty obvious isn't it what with the long comment threads... i am thinking of integrating nabble.com somehow... want a nice project :) —TonyZuccarino
