Yeah, there are lots of four wheel opportunities in and around Bear Valley. This was taken near Lake Alpine.
Massive cloud expansion most every summer afternoon. Imagine the thermal energy released in one of these! Usually these cloud buildups culminate in mid-afternoon thunderstorms audible in Bear Valley; but, the rain will often stay well to the east. As the afternoon progresses and the sun gets deeper in the horizon, the upward air expansion loses steam, and the clouds dissipate by evening.

Moon on a cool summer night. Summer is great here once the brief mosquito breeding season is over.
Worried about driving up Hwy 4 after a monster snowstorm?. Check [Weather] first. But, as you can see, the roads are very well plowed around here. There are two Caltrans stations just east of Arnold, and those boys clear the snow fast! Chain control is applied by the CHP judiciously....
Bear Valley black diamond runs are challenging, just not as long as a Vail run. Of course, we don't have to wait in 45 minute lift lines, either :)!!!
We get SERIOUS snow up here in BV. Snowmobiles, cross country skis or snowshoes are a must to get around.
Bear Lake... very nice! This was taken during the middle of spring melt.
Granite is the key word in Bear Valley... lots and lots of it.
Nice homes, too. Not quite Henry David Thoreau, though.
Unlike other ski towns, the residential areas are not plowed in winter. A snowmobile is undoubtedly the best way to get yourself, your family, groceries, your trash, furniture... everything to and from your home or rental cabin. Luckily, the propane company has a snow cat that can supply gas if need be. There are snow cat operators in town who can be hired, also.

The Dardanelles.
Bear Valley has an awesome summer program. Every day kids can drop into camp and enjoy a different activity: kayaking, mountain biking, hiking, rock climbing... It's a kids life up here. Funny how they don't miss XBOX or Family Guy when they are up here.
The next 4-5 pics are snaps along Hwy 4 between Ebbetts Pass and Markleeville, Alpine County seat.... This is one of the truly spectacular mountain drives of the world. OK, it's not the Dolomites, but it's pretty neck twisting in its own right. This drive is a must for all motorcyclists and sports car owners!
There was still snow on Folger Peak in August! It was over 90 degrees in Bear Valley at 7100'; yet, this snow hung around practically all summer.
Summer at Lake Alpine. I took this picture while on a mountain bike ride on a quiet weekday in June.
Lake Alpine during the winter. I took this picture while out snowshoeing on a cold Sunday in February.
My bike rides around BV and Lake Alpine sometimes include a trail that goes up and over Osborne Hill. Here's a view from near the top of Osborne Ridge on a nice warm summer day.
The view from the same area during winter taken on the same day as the Lake Alpine picture.
