DUCK LAKE. Start at the Silver Valley Trailhead at the East end of Lake Alpine. The hike goes into the Carson Iceberg Wilderness, rising over a ridge and then down into the valley where Duck Lake sits. There are a couple of abandoned shacks by the lake. The area around the lake is filled with wild flowers in the early summer and often you will hear a cacaphony as you approach the lake as cow bell sounds fill the air. You can walk another 2 miles around the lake before returning back to the same trailhead. This is a great one for young kids so bring a camera.

2007-11-26 18:02:50   The first time I saw Duck Lake was on a hike down to Rock Lake. I was there in early summer and I viewed the lake and meadow from the east looking west and thought that I must have found Alpine Heaven! The flowers, the meadow, the lake, the cabins all come together to create a surreal scene that is a must see. —BobRynd

2007-12-04 22:31:12   Added .gpx file for Garmin GPS. We hiked down over Thanksgiving weekend and the lake was frozen over. Great hike for the kids! —TimMurray

2007-12-05 10:07:44   Thanks Tim..., hey if you could write a short article for the wiki on why/how to generate GPX files, that would be great. I too am a fan of adding some hard geo data to these hiking articles. I know Dan won't be adding them :), but I would like to. —TonyZuccarino

2007-12-05 14:01:25   I just got my GPS and am a bit of a rookie. I figured you were a pro at it after reading your article on the Corral Meadows 25-mile loop, complete w/ .gpx, topo image, and a snapshot of the elevation graph. I can spend some time on it over the holidays when I'm off work. —TimMurray

2007-12-06 10:33:05   hi Tim, yes I've done it, but I thought an article would be good for others who haven't yet, but do carry a handheld GPS around. —TonyZuccarino
